Sustainable logistics

Together we make logistics more sustainable

Most people agree that sustainability is the future, and customers and businesses alike are all interested in finding the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. Although the logistics industry has not traditionally been at the forefront of sustainability, we are working hard to change this. However, success requires everyone involved to work towards the same goals.

What does sustainable logistics mean?

For a logistics chain to be socially, economically and climate sustainable, it is not enough to optimise only a certain part of the chain. Everything from production, packaging, storage, delivery planning and transport must be taken into account and evaluated. This means that many people need to be involved in sustainability work - both inside and outside the company. Each area needs to be analysed in order to define what weaknesses exist and how they can be addressed. For one entity that consumes a lot of energy, it may mean switching to renewable energy sources, while for another it may be a matter of working environment.

PostNord's sustainability goals

Postnord's primary ambition is for our transport to be completely fossil-free by 2030. We hope to achieve this by reducing air transport while investing more in renewable fuels and electric vehicles. We're constantly looking for greener solutions in everything from technology to delivery - without compromising the customer experience. Our goal is not only to minimise our own and our suppliers' carbon footprint, but also to help lead the entire industry towards a sustainable transition.

How to create a sustainable logistics chain?

Improving an existing supply chain requires three things: clear goals, financial sustainability and commitment. Everyone involved in the logistics chain in one way or another needs to be aware of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the ways in which they can actually make a difference. This applies not least to the end customer, since it is ultimately the customer to whom the logistics are adapted. By informing customers about how they can make a difference and encouraging them to take responsibility, together we can reduce the climate impact of e-commerce.

A concrete approach that may be worth considering is the consolidation of transport through so-called consolidation of logistics, which can bring significant benefits for both the wallet and the environment.

Another important factor to consider is economic sustainability - to create lasting change, the new solutions also need to be economically beneficial. In addition, it is important not to forget the employees: creating an attractive workplace is a prerequisite for their commitment to the company's sustainability strategy.
